There are 2 basic types of balloons: Latex & Mylar
LATEX
Latex balloons are made of a biodegradable compound of synthetic rubber, and do not harm the environment. They come in a wide range of sizes, colors and shapes. Round latex balloons range from 5 inches to 8 feet in diameter. The most common are the 11" balloons, which are available in an array of colors and textures.Imprinted latex balloons have a wide variety of messages.
Long latex balloons are available in different sizes and are mainly used for balloon animals and in balloon sculptures. Other shapes like blossoms, donuts, and hearts add interest and pizzazz to balloon bouquets.
Most latex balloons can be inflated with helium or air. Helium quality just means that they can be filled with helium. But so can paper bags. Cheap balloons will not float properly or if they do will only last at most a few hours. When inflating a balloon, it is important to fill the balloon properly to achieve a "balloon shape", under-inflating makes the shape too round and over-inflating produces a pear shaped balloon. All balloons should be "SIZED". This will insure that all balloons are the same size and look uniform, whether in Balloon-Bouquets ordecorations, this is a must.
Because latex is a porous material, helium or air will escape through the surface. Air-filled balloons generally last longer because air molecules move slower and are larger than helium. The length of time a helium balloon will float can be greatly extended by using Ultra Hi-Float, a liquid plastic (water-soluable) substance which coats the inside of the balloon and prevents the helium from escaping. A properly-inflated helium balloon can be expected to last more than a week. The balloon will oxidize and become velvety in appearance--this is the first step in the oxidation process. Helium balloons are usually hand-tied and tied to curling ribbon which is attached to a weight. Air-filled balloons can be put on a cup and stick and do not float.
MYLARS
Mylar balloons come in a vast array of colors, shapes, and sizes. All kinds of messages are available. The newest and very popular are the Singing Balloons . Really "Special for your Special Someone" Mylar balloons have a valve at the fill point and can usually be refilled.
